I’ll be honest: when I first heard about the Liberator Wedge, I was skeptical. We’d used regular pillows under hips for years. What could a wedge-shaped foam pillow do that a folded bed pillow couldn’t? And how do you justify spending $100 on something that doesn’t even vibrate?

Turns out, quite a lot. Since we got ours (nearly a decade ago now!), I’ve been genuinely surprised at how often we reach for it and how much of a difference it makes. It’s become one of those bedroom tools I’d genuinely miss if it disappeared.

So if you’re wondering whether a sex wedge pillow is worth it (and what you’d actually do with one), this post is for you.

What Is a Sex Wedge Pillow?

A sex wedge pillow is a firm, wedge-shaped cushion designed specifically to support and elevate the hips, pelvis, or other body parts during sex. Unlike a regular pillow (which compresses under weight and slides around), a sex wedge holds its shape and stays put.

The Liberator Wedge is the most well-known version. It’s about 24 inches long, 14 inches wide, and tapers from about 7 inches at the thick end down to 3 inches at the thin end. It’s covered in a soft, microfiber cover that unzips for washing, and underneath that is a firm foam core that doesn’t collapse under pressure.

The difference between that and a regular pillow is enormous in practice.

Why Does Elevation Actually Matter?

Angle changes everything in sex. A small tilt of the pelvis can:

  • Change the angle of penetration, affecting which areas of the vaginal wall get stimulated
  • Bring the clitoris into a better position for stimulation during intercourse
  • Reduce strain on the lower back, hips, and knees; especially important for people with physical limitations
  • Improve access for oral sex and manual stimulation
  • Add stability to positions that might otherwise feel awkward or wobbly

The wedge does all of this consistently, every time, without the frustration of constantly readjusting a pillow that’s slipped out of position.

Wedge Pillow Sex Positions: 10 Ways to Use It

1. Missionary With Hip Elevation

This is the most common use and it genuinely transforms the position. Place the wedge under your wife’s hips with the thick end toward her lower back. The elevation tilts her pelvis upward, changing the angle of penetration and making clitoral stimulation during intercourse more achievable.

This matters because the clitoris is the primary source of orgasm for most women, and standard missionary often doesn’t provide enough friction in the right place. Even a few degrees of tilt changes the contact point significantly. If your wife hasn’t been orgasming from penetration alone, this is one of the simplest adjustments you can make.

Experiment with having the thick end at different points: right under the hips, or slid further toward the lower back. The optimal position varies by body type.

2. Rear Entry (Doggy Style) With Wedge Support

In doggy style, the wedge serves a different purpose. Place it under your wife’s hips and abdomen so she can rest on it rather than holding herself up on hands and knees. This shifts the position from ‘kneeling upright’ to something closer to prone, which has a few advantages.

First, it removes the physical effort of maintaining the position, so she can focus entirely on sensation rather than using her arms and core to stay upright. Second, lying over the wedge changes the angle of entry, which most couples find provides deeper penetration. Third (and this is something several women have mentioned to me over the years), facing downward lets gravity pull the clitoris into a position where it’s more sensitive and easier to stimulate manually from underneath at the same time.

3. Prone Bone (Flat-on-Stomach Position)

This is similar to the above but more pronounced. Your wife lies flat on her stomach with the wedge positioned under her hips and pelvis. You enter from behind while lying on top of her or kneeling behind.

Without the wedge, prone bone is a tricky angle that often doesn’t work well geometrically. The wedge solves this by lifting her hips just enough to make entry comfortable and effective. This position produces very different stimulation than standard doggy (more pressure against the front vaginal wall) and many couples who’ve never tried it before find it becomes a favourite.

4. Oral Sex: Wife Receiving

Slide the wedge under your wife’s hips and buttocks while she lies on her back. The elevation lifts her genitals slightly, which ‘opens up’ the area and makes navigation significantly easier for the giving partner. Less neck strain, better angle, and easier access to the clitoris without having to contort.

It sounds like a small thing, but if you’ve ever had to stop to readjust mid-session because of neck or back strain, you’ll appreciate how much this helps.

5. Oral Sex: Husband Receiving

Place the wedge under your hips while lying on your back. This lifts the penis up, so your wife doesn’t have to strain her neck downward as much. It makes the angle more comfortable for extended sessions and reduces fatigue for the giving partner significantly.

6. Head-Off-the-Bed Position

This is one I discovered out of necessity. We didn’t have a bed frame for a long time (king mattress and boxspring directly on the floor; practical with young kids, less fall risk), which meant the off-the-bed oral position where the receiver’s head hangs off the edge was never really accessible to us.

The wedge changed that. By using it as an elevated surface for the receiver’s head and neck, you get the mechanics of the position without the problems: the head is supported, it’s not fully inverted so the blood-rush pressure is reduced, and the giving partner has full access. If you’ve never tried this position, it’s worth experimenting with.

7. 69 Position

In a 69 with the husband on the bottom, use the wedge as a head support to lift your head up to meet your wife rather than straining your neck upward for extended periods. This sounds minor but makes a real difference in how long you can comfortably maintain the position.

8. Manual Stimulation: Both Partners at Once

Here’s one that isn’t immediately obvious. Have your wife lie over the wedge face-down (similar to the prone bone position), but instead of penetration, use this as a manual stimulation position. With her hips elevated and tilted, you have access to both penetrate with fingers or a toy and stimulate her clitoris simultaneously, from behind and underneath. The angle makes this much easier than trying to do it while she’s flat.

Alternatively: wife on her back, wedge under her hips, husband kneeling near her head so she can offer him oral sex while he reaches down to manually stimulate her. Both partners are actively engaged, neither is straining to reach anything. It also works well for clitoral stimulation with a vibrator while maintaining intimacy.

9. Cowgirl/Woman-on-Top Variations

Place the wedge under the husband’s lower back or hips while he lies on his back. This tilts his pelvis upward, which changes the angle of penetration during cowgirl and gives your wife a different surface to work with. It also reduces strain on the husband’s lower back during longer sessions in this position.

10. Restraint Positions (Black Label Version)

If you have the Liberator Black Label Wedge (more on this below), the D-ring clips on the sides open up a whole additional dimension. Use the wedge as the base for light restraint scenarios: wrists clipped to the sides, or ankles depending on position. The wedge holds its position even with movement, which matters for restraint play where you need a stable surface.

If you’re curious about bondage within marriage but not sure where to start, I’ve written about it here: My Wife Wants Me To Tie Her Up?! and Beginner Bondage Questions.

Which Sex Wedge Pillow Should You Get? (Liberator Comparison)

Liberator Wedge: Standard vs Black Label

The standard Wedge is available in blue, black, and red. The Black Label version is only available in black, costs a little more, but adds D-ring attachment points on the sides for accessories and restraints. If you have any interest in bondage or think you might in the future, the Black Label is worth the small price difference.

Liberator Wedge vs Ramp

The Ramp is larger, taller, and more versatile than the Wedge. It can support more of the body and is better suited for taller couples or those who want more dramatic elevation. The trade-off is size and price. If you’re tall (both of you) or if the Wedge isn’t quite giving you enough lift, the Ramp is worth looking at. We’re a tall couple and we eventually got the Ramp as well.

Liberator Wedge vs Jaz

The Jaz is rounder and lower-profile than the Wedge. It’s less expensive and works well for smaller adjustments; particularly for oral sex positioning. If your main use case is oral sex support rather than penetration angles, the Jaz might suit you. If you want versatility across positions, the Wedge covers more ground.

Wedge/Ramp Combo

Liberator sells the Wedge and Ramp together as a combo that stacks to create a larger positioning surface. It’s a significant investment and takes up more room, but if you’re committed to exploring positioning furniture seriously, the combo is genuinely more versatile than either piece alone.

A Note on the Cover

The microfiber cover is soft and pleasant against skin (genuinely, not just in a marketing-copy way). More importantly, it unzips and goes straight in the washing machine and dryer. This matters. The foam core underneath has a waterproof layer, but it’s not something you’d want against skin during sex and it wouldn’t wash as easily. Always use the cover.

Where to Buy

Liberator sells directly from their own site, but I’ll be honest: their website is not exactly safe for browsing in a shared space, even after their attempts at a ‘clean’ experience. I consistently recommend Married Dance instead. Their prices are competitive, the shopping experience is genuinely safe and discreet, and they stock the full Liberator range including the Black Label version.

Final Thoughts

The sex wedge pillow is one of those purchases that seems frivolous until you’ve used it a few times and wondered why you waited so long. It’s not a gimmick. It’s a simple tool that solves real physical problems: strain, angle, access, and stability.

If you’ve been using pillows to try to achieve the same thing, you already understand the principle. The Liberator Wedge just does it properly: holds its shape, stays in place, and cleans up easily.

My wife and I did purchase this pillow a few years ago. After trying several times in different positions, we did not find it helpful. Perhaps this is due to my wife’s weight gain or maybe some of her medical conditions. However, I still recommend couples trying it and see if it works for them. By the way, we bought ours through Amazon for less than $80.00.

  2. Mike says:

We’re looking into getting the Liberator Ramp instead of the Wedge. It’s much more expensive but looks to be more versatile and we’re tall people anyway.

  3. Nathanael Dror says:

My wife is “large”. It is impossible to reach within her fatty legs to give her oral sex.
Now it is difficult to reach into her for manual sex as well.
We also have difficulties positing ourselves for normal kissing experiences.

If you like the wedge, I’d also recommend the Wedge-Ramp Combo or even the Esse. Takes things to a whole new level!

No doubt, but they also take up a whole lot more room.

  5. Lisa says:

Trying to decide between the wedge and the jaz from liberator. Which would be the best for doggy and other positions. My husband is a foot taller than me.

We don’t have a Jaz, so I’m not sure. However, I do have a Liberator Ramp coming in the mail and we’re getting the “tall” version, because we’re tall people. Stay tuned and I’ll get a review out as soon as I can.

Thanks a lot for the great Liberator guide! We have the Jaz at home and it’s also a great product from Liberator. And it’s a bit cheaper too 🙂

This would be more helpful if there were pictures (not cartoons) instead of text. Better yet, a video of different uses/positions would be better.
