Why this workbook exists

You know where your money will be in ten years. Do you know where your marriage will be?

Ask most couples about the next decade and they can tell you a lot: the house, the retirement account, which kid will be learning to drive. Ask what their marriage will look like and you usually get a pause, a laugh, and “Well, hopefully still married.” That is a hope that nothing goes wrong. Nothing breaks when you skip the ten-year picture, so you drift, slowly, until one day you notice you are living a marriage neither of you chose.

Our Marriage Assessment scores a marriage area by area. Vision, a shared picture of where your marriage is going, kept turning up near the bottom.

17%
of assessment results had vision as the weakest area: 61 of 351. Only spirituality (84) and sex (62) came up more often.
19
prompts for each of you, across six areas of your marriage plus “the hard one”, with room to write your answers.
90
minutes, in three steps of about thirty: write alone, read aloud, then write one shared page together.

Assessment figures are from the Uncovering Intimacy Marriage Assessment: 351 scored results from 334 people, as of August 2026, each counted once under its lowest-scoring area. The people who take it are self-selected readers, not a random sample; the workbook explains the caveats.

What is inside

A short read, one evening’s exercise, and the pages to keep it going for a decade.

1 Why ten years: a fill-in table to do the math on your own family, and an honest word about “vision” verses
2 How the ninety minutes work: three steps, the ground rules, and why you write in the present tense
3 Husband’s pages: nineteen prompts on everyday life, sex, faith, family, money and work, and health, written alone
4 Wife’s pages: the same prompts on her own pages, so both pictures make it onto paper
5 Reading them to each other: listen, ask, and mark where you were surprised, where you agree and where you are far apart
6 Our shared page: what you both want, what is not agreed yet, and a line for both signatures
7 Keeping it alive: your first 90-day step, a yearly check-in, and a ten-year anniversary log
8 If your spouse won’t do it: a smaller start and a page for one, plus 12 conversation starters

Print it single-sided, so each of you can take your own pages away from the table. You are welcome to print as many copies of the writing pages as the two of you need.

What it is not

Not a goal-setting seminar. Not a contract God has to sign.

This is not a five-year plan with a Bible verse stapled to it. The workbook is honest that Proverbs 29:18 is about God’s revelation, not goal setting, and leans instead on what Scripture does say about planning: you plan your way, and the Lord establishes your steps. You write down what you hope for, pray over it, hold it loosely, and let Him change it.

It also does not skip the hard parts. The sex section is in there on purpose, because it is the one area of your marriage nobody else can plan for you, and the shared page has room for “not agreed yet” so nobody has to give in to get it finished.

This workbook is for couples who want to plan their marriage on purpose. It is not counselling. If your marriage involves abuse, an active affair or an addiction that is not being dealt with, start with a pastor, a counsellor or a coach.

Who wrote it

Jay Dee, Uncovering Intimacy

Since 2012 we have published over 660 articles and 150 podcast episodes on sex in Christian marriage, run dozens of reader surveys, and coached couples through exactly this. Our position is simple: marriage is God’s design, and He cares where yours is going. Planning it on purpose is not a lack of faith.
