Why this guide exists

Ask him who he would call at two in the morning about his marriage. The list is short.

Most married men at church would say they have friends. But for a third of the husbands who answered our survey, there is nobody outside their wife they can be honest with. If things are good at home, that is a lot of weight on one relationship. If she is the hard thing, or she is deep in a hard season of her own, he has nobody at all. And the men with nobody else turn out to be the men most likely to go quiet at home too.

We asked our readers about mental health and marriage in 2026. Here is some of what came back.

34%
of married men have nobody outside their wife they can talk to honestly. Married women: 15%.
59%
of husbands with no confidant often hold back what they really feel from their wife, against 30% of men with two or more.
12%
of husbands with no confidant often felt truly seen and understood by anyone. With two or more friends: 54%.

From the 2026 Mental Health and Marriage survey (524 married respondents: 366 men and 158 women). The second and third figures compare 112 men with nobody to 141 men with two or more confidants. Our readers are not a random sample; the guide explains the caveats.

What is inside

Three jobs: show you the data, name why men go quiet, and give you the practical part.

1 What 524 marriages told us: the confidant gap, the men who asked nobody, and what it costs
2 Why men go quiet: shame, the fix-it reflex, protecting her, and church as usual
3 What the silence costs your marriage: holding back, being understood, and where sex fits
4 Telling her the truth: five steps, and the words to start with
5 Building one honest friendship: where to look, how to ask, and four levels of going deeper
6 Not meant to be alone: what Scripture says, and what praying together looked like in our data
7 When it is more than lonely: depression, despair, and getting real help
8 A page for your wife, written to be handed across the table
9 The four-week plan: one step at home and one with another man, each week
A Appendix: questions that go deeper, for coffee with a friend or the weekly check-in

Every chapter ends with a small, concrete thing to try this week. Most take less than ten minutes. All of them are harder than they look.

What it is not

Not “man up.” Not a call to replace your wife with the guys.

Most advice to lonely men either tells them to toughen up or to go find their tribe. This guide does neither. It treats openness as a skill you can learn at any age, starts with one true sentence to your wife, and then helps you find one man who is for your marriage, not one who joins in when you are frustrated with her. A good friendship sends you home better, and takes some of the weight off her.

It also does not pretend loneliness is always just loneliness. Chapter 7 walks through the signs that it is time to see a doctor or counsellor, and why getting help is part of leading well.

This guide is education and encouragement, not counselling or medical care. If you are thinking about ending your life, please reach out now: findahelpline.com lists free, confidential crisis lines in over 130 countries, and in Canada or the United States you can call or text 988.

Who wrote it

Jay Dee, Uncovering Intimacy

Since 2012 we have published over 660 articles and 150 podcast episodes on sex in Christian marriage, run dozens of reader surveys, and coached husbands and couples through exactly this kind of silence. Our position is simple: a man was never meant to carry it alone. Marriage is meant to be his closest human relationship, not his only one.
