Why this guide exists

Almost everything about ADHD is written to the person who has it. Almost nothing is written to the marriage.

The bags sit by the back door for three days. One of you sees someone who does not care. The other walked past them nine times, meant to take them every time, and never got from meaning to doing. Most of the pain in an ADHD marriage comes from reading the wiring as a message about love. And the bedroom, where ADHD does some of its quietest damage, usually gets one paragraph, if that.

Here is what we see in coaching, and what our readers tell us about the bedroom.

11 of 28
coaching couples had ADHD as a real, worked-on part of the picture. None of them named it when they booked.
86%
of readers who get turned down for sex feel rejected at least sometimes. Only 63% of those doing the declining think so.
43%
of readers say their spouse rarely or never initiates sex.

Coaching figure from anonymized records of 28 couples, 2025 to 2026. Survey figures from “What happens when one spouse wants sex and the other doesn’t” (n=1,472 turned down, n=1,004 declining, n=1,592 on initiation). None of our surveys has asked about ADHD yet, so these numbers describe all our readers, not ADHD couples in particular. Our readers are not a random sample; the guide explains the caveats.

What is inside

Each chapter explains a mechanism, then turns to each of you: if you have ADHD, and if you are married to it.

1 The wiring: what ADHD actually is, the interest-based brain, and the misreadings it causes at home
2 Time, chores and the parent trap: why the Sunday talk never sticks, and how to stop being each other’s parent
3 Emotions at full volume: flooding, the two clocks, and a fire drill for fights
4 Rejection sensitivity: what RSD is and is not, what it does to “not tonight”, and scripts for declining and repairing
5 In the bedroom, part one: wanting it and starting it, the 9:40 invoice, impulsivity, and why the parent role kills desire
6 In the bedroom, part two: distraction during sex, sensory settings, the honeymoon cliff, novelty, and medication
7 Getting assessed and getting help: who to see, what a good assessment looks like, and help without shame
8 The four-week reset, plus a scripts card for your phone and a checklist to take to the doctor

It is written to be read together. Short on time? Read Chapter 1 as a couple, then go to Chapters 4, 5 and 6.

What it is not

Not an excuse. Not a diagnosis.

A mechanism explains a pattern; it does not excuse it. The spouse with ADHD still owns the outcome. What changes is the method, because willpower and promises have already been tried. This guide gives you systems, scripts and small weekly steps, and it is just as honest with the spouse who is tired of managing everything. It also tells you plainly what it cannot do: diagnose either of you, or tell you whether to take medication.

“Importance does not start this brain. Interest, novelty, challenge and urgency do.” From Chapter 1.

This guide is education, not diagnosis or medical care. It cannot diagnose ADHD or anything else and does not recommend any medication; assessment and treatment belong with a qualified clinician.

Who wrote it

Jay Dee, Uncovering Intimacy

Since 2012 we have published over 660 articles and 150 podcast episodes on sex in Christian marriage, run dozens of reader surveys, and coached couples through exactly this. Our position is simple: sex in marriage is God’s gift, and ADHD does not cancel it. It is a reason to build something that works for the two brains you actually have.
